The term “cloud”
is used as a metaphor for the Internet. The experts are still
working on an exact definition but basically, Cloud software is installed on the internet
(sometimes referred to as a “Virtual Server”) and not on the computers in your
office.
Cloud Computing is similar to web hosting in
that the Software (web-site) is central to many remote computers for easy
accessibility. Software and data
is stored on separate virtual servers, generally hosted by third party
companies.
From an IT
(Information Technology) standpoint, it allows businesses to increase efficiency and add
capabilities without employing your own Geek Team to do it – your Software as a Service. Up-front costs are lower and system management is done by someone
else enabling a better return on your investment. You are essentially
leasing not buying your hardware and/or software.
ø
Virtual
Server – A Virtual Server is a way
to partition one computer into several, all sharing the same resources. The word Virtual means the system is not dedicated to running the
same software.
As an example, Web hosting is commonly managed with a Virtual (Web)
Server. Instead of requiring a separate computer for each server, dozens
of Virtual Servers can co-reside on the same computer.
ø
Software as a Service
(SaaS) – SaaS is becoming a
popular method of utilizing software without purchasing, installing, and maintaining it on your own
dedicated system.
E-mail is a small example of
SaaS. You no
longer need Outlook® type of software to read e-mails. You can use your browser to
access your e-mail from any internet connection.
Gaming software is another example of SaaS when the Game itself is on a Virtual
Server and accessed by the user remotely via the internet.
